Hear me out: you can still reparent yourself even if you had great parents. Because even those with “great” childhoods can have unmet needs. If you had a great childhood full of positive memories and loving parents, I am happy for you. And I still believe that no matter how loving and attentive your parents were, they weren’t perfect. We all come through childhood with some wounds or unmet needs, and the job is ours as adults to identify and heal those wounds. And if you insist you have no childhood wounds... sometimes that insistence that your parents were “great” is just a defensive part of you protecting you from the pain of the truth. Here’s why these are my 5 horror movies as a therapist + parent deconstructing toxic Christian parenting: -“Spare the rod, spoil the child” is not actually in the Bible. This saying is used to justify and sanction corporal punishment, which is a form of trauma that harms a child’s attachment and is ineffective. -“Your heart is wicked and deceitful” is used to create self-doubt and distrust of our own voice, so we outsource our decision-making to those in authority instead of learning how to listen to God within us. -“Honor your mother and father no matter what” justifies putting up with mistreatment and demand instant obedience regardless of your age. While “honoring” is a good thing, that can be done in many ways that also honor the adult child. -“Do unto others so you have to put others first” teaches Christians, especially women, to be subservient and put everyone’s needs above theirs, leading to resentment, burn-out, and overfunctioning. -“Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect” instills perfectionism, shame, and self-criticism. The word for “perfect” actually means whole and complete, not a hamster wheel of performance and meeting others’ expectations. As a Millennial mom and therapist, I hope my kids never see a picture of motherhood that represents constant subservience, self-sacrifice, and a loss of self. Instead, what if they see: “Mom, you taught me to honor and understand my emotions.” “Because of you, I learned to accept and nurture my strong will.” “You taught me how to respect myself and others, while standing up for myself.” “You showed us a more expansive view of what motherhood looks like.” “All you cared about was connecting with us and making us feel seen, known, and loved.” Motherhood should not be a loss of self, but an expansion and integration of the different parts of us into one Self. And that is a message I hope my kids write on my Mothers Day card one day. #mothersday #motherhood #egalitarian #thisiswhatafeministlookslife #reparenting

You’re allowed to spend your Mothers Day how you want. “Happy Mothers Day,” I said to an acquaintance, a fellow mom, at church. “What are your plans today?” She sighed, looking stressed. “Well, first we have to go to my parents’ house for lunch. Then taking my husband’s mom out to dinner. But first a stop at my grandma’s house. There’s a lot of running around. What are you doing?” “Just going out to lunch with my husband and kids, then to the park to ride scooters!” I said. “We send our moms a card but don’t have plans with them this year.” “Ugh, that would be so nice,” she replied. “I’d love to spend the day just with my kids, but I have to go see every mom and grandma. I wish I could spend the day how I want.” YOU CAN, I thought. You can choose how to spend your Mothers Day as an active mom. This day doesn’t have to be about pleasing the generations above you. Maybe it can be about enjoying the generation below you—your kids—and investing in the legacy you’re creating. Consider this your permission to set boundaries around how and with whom you spend your Mothers Day. #mothersday #reparenting #breakingcycles #boundaries #selfcare
